Education

Here are some links I've compiled which may be useful for teachers of evolution or entomology. If you find any other useful links, or notice problems with one here, please email me.

General evolution information

NOVA's Evolution: A seven-part NOVA television series which starts in September 2001. The website will includes multimedia teaching resources. You may also order a free teacher's guide.

Introduction to evolution: A thorough overview of evolution. Hosted on the generally good Talk.Origins website.

Teaching About Evolution and the Nature of Science: Published by the National Academy of Sciences, this free online book provides a good overview of evolution and how to teach it. The book may also be purchased. Also see the NAS's Science and Creationism.

Tree of Life: The Tree of Life is a project containing information about the diversity of organisms on Earth, their history, and characteristics. The information is linked together in the form of the evolutionary tree that connects all organisms to each other.

BBC's evolution website: Includes the full text of the Origin of Species and an artificial life simulation.

Activities for classrooms

Woodrow Wilson Leadership Program: Written by teachers for teachers. Many excellent classroom activities, including paper labs and wet labs. Be sure to check out the evolution section, though the biodiversity sections and other sections are also quite good.

ENSI/SENSI: A site containing activities dealing with cladistics, speciation, natural selection, etc. Includes handouts.

Biology Student Workbench: Includes activities on generating phylogenetic trees using some of the same techniques we use here. Also see the related Biology Workbench for Students.

Insects in the classroom: Lesson plans and more involving insects.

AP Biology Teachers' Corner: Information on seminars, textbook reviews, education supplements, etc. There is also an active AP biology teachers' mailing list.

Other information for teachers

Entomology index of internet resources: Maintained by Iowa State, a vast searchable database of websites with insect information. See its special site for K-12 educators, which includes lesson plans, general insect information, and more. Very useful.

Introduction to cladistics: Provides a brief overview of cladistics and its use in systematics. Hosted by UC Berkeley's Museum of Paleontology.

Insectclopedia: Information, images, links about insects.

Entomology on the web: A massive list of links to insect sites.

Sinauer: Publisher of many good works on evolutionary biology. You may want to look at Futuyma's Evolutionary Biology or an educators' version of MacClade.
